School To Career Transition Department

Registration for the 2008-2009 school year is just around the corner.  There are two excellent programs for juniors and seniors to participate in that allow them to get real world experience in a career area they are possibly interested in pursuing.

The Internship program is a two credit, one semester interactive experience open to seniors.  This experience is a direct link between the academic high school program and the world of work.  It is an Honors  program, reflecting the academic rigor required in college and high-level career areas.  The students meet once a week during enrichment with their coordinators and are monitored at the workplace setting by their coordinator.  This program replaces two credits of elective courses their senior year.

The Work Experience program is open to all students in grades 11 and 12.  Students are in school for the morning two classes and report to their worksites in the afternoons.  The focus of the program is on career preparation and developing workplace readiness skills.  Students receive 2 credits for the work experience in grade 11.  Seniors earn 3 credits for the work experience and take a 1 credit required course called Occupational Preparation.  This four credit combination serves as a completer program for graduation.

Students interested in registering for either of these programs should fill out and turn in an application at registration time.  Applications can be secured from the Guidance Office or the School to Career Office (located beside room 114).  For more information call Cheryl Burkett or Ginny Roil at 410-887-1936, or email cberrymanburkett@bcps.org or vroil@bcps.org .
